Vestal Review is the oldest magazine of flash fiction, published continuously since 2000.
Fiction
Size limit: 500
Vestal Review publishes its print issues twice a year in a perfect-bound edition. Some of the content is available on the Web. We welcome your submissions, but please read our guidelines first. We don't read new submissions in December, January, June and July. All submissions sent during this time will be deleted.
Because of the great number of submissions, we are accepting only two submissions per author in a reading period (the time between two consecutive issues). Each submission is to be sent separately. We would regretfully delete any submissions after the initial two.
Our reading periods are:
1. February-May
2. August-November
All submissions should be sent through our submission manager. We do not accept any other forms of submissions. Our editors live in different cities, so we can not share a postal submission between us. Postal (snail-mail) submissions will be discarded or returned. Snail-mail submission without SASE will be discarded.
Vestal Review is a magazine for flash (short-shorts) fiction, 500 words or less.

1. We will select the three best entries every month and post them on our Website. We will acquire First North American Serial Rights. All of the selected entries will be printed in our semi-annual print issue. The author of the top entry will get one copy of the print issue and $10. There is no payment for any other entry. The rights will revert to the author after the printing of the print issue, but you have to acknowledge Vestal Review in all subsequent publications. The decision of the editors is final.
2. We will reply only to accepted submissions. Please do not query about the status.
Submit any time. It will not count toward your two submissions.
Anthology: What I learned From My Pet. A News flash.
Size limit: 25 words
Stories about pets--cats, dogs and others--25 words or less. This anthology is not going to be a part of Vestal Review magazine, but a separate, shared royalty electronic and print anthology, published by the Vestal Review Press.Example:
"It’s hard to be an effective communicator if you don’t have a tail."
Condensed to Flash: World Classics
Size limit: 500 words
"Condensed to Flash: World Classics," an electronic and print anthology for the people who love concise writing that is intense, entertaining and educational. This anthology will feature world classics condensed to 500 words or fewer. Interpret the theme broadly and imaginatively. We are not interested in summaries, but in literary stories that stand on their own, with a beginning, middle and end. You can add a twist or two-a preferable option-but the plot has to be well-recognized. Classics from the public domain only, please. They can be either novels or short stories, but you must identify the source.Editors: Mark Budman and Michael Martone.
